Services

  • Traditional Funeral: The most common in the U.S. (83%) involves removal of the body from the place of death; obtaining death certificate; placing obituary notices; preparing the body (usually including embalming) and placing and arranging the casket for viewing; ordering flowers; conducting visiting hours at the funeral home; providing care of the body; organizing and directing the funeral service, often in a chapel at the funeral home; arranging for a member of the clergy to conduct a religious ceremony. If requested, making cemetery arrangements; arranging for pallbearers, if necessary; transporting the body to the cemetery or the crematorium and organizing the funeral procession.
  • Graveside or church Service: A variation on the traditional funeral in which the service is conducted at the graveside or in the church, thereby eliminating the need for using the funeral home facilities for the service. A graveside service also eliminates the need for organizing a funeral procession.
  • Direct Burial or Cremation: A minimum funeral which involves removal of the body from the place of death to the cemetery or crematorium. The funeral director secures the death certificate; but there is no use of the funeral home, no embalming, no visiting hours; and no funeral procession. A memorial service (one without the body present) is often arranged later by the family, friends or church pastor.

Cremation reduces the human remains to ashes, which can be placed in a small container for burial; in an urn for the family to keep; or scattered over the land or sea (where permitted).
