Mr. James Alford Stem, age 66, of Shelbyville, died Monday, June 1, 2009, at his home after an extended illness.

Funeral Services will be 11 AM Thursday, June 4, 2009, at Feldhaus Memorial Chapel.  Reverend Jimmy Gray will officiate, with burial to follow in Willow Mount Cemetery.

Visitation will be 4-8 PM Wednesday at Feldhaus Memorial Chapel.

He was born April 2, 1943, in Bedford County, to the late James Rucker and Gladys Smith Stem.  He was retired from Sanford Corporation.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Irene Cook Stem, in December of 2008, and grandson, Wesley Stem in 2008.  He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Clarence and John Wesley Stem.

He is survived by two sons, James Wesley Stem, and his wife Daphne, and Jeffrey Wayne Stem, and his wife Tina, all of Shelbyville; a daughter, Terrie Claxton Moss, and her husband Ronald, of Shelbyville; five sisters, Ann Robertson and Shirley Faulk, both of Shelbyville, Margaret Leathers and Martha Stem, both of Murfreesboro, and Susan Woodall, of Unionville; a brother, Howard Lovvorn; four grandchildren, Kally Renee Ewing, Jeffrey Michael Stem, Bridgette Nicole Claxton, and Sabrina Kaye Claxton; one great grandchild, Lexi Lucero Duarte.

Mrs. Ruby Pugh Cook Cartwright, age 82, of Shelbyville, died Sunday, June 7, 2009, at Heritage Medical Center. 

Funeral services will be 1 PM Tuesday, June 9, 2009, at Feldhaus Memorial Chapel.  Jeff Smith will officiate, with burial to follow in Smyrna Cemetery in Chapel Hill. 

Visitation will be 4-8 PM Monday at Feldhaus Memorial Chapel. 

She was born September 19, 1926, in Marshall County, to the late Robert and Beatrice Haynes Pugh.  She worked with Eureka Corporation many years ago, was a homemaker, attended Haskins Chapel Assembly of God, and loved to play bingo. 

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Fount Cook, in 1965, and her second husband, Allen Cartwright, in 1985. She was also preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters, Pete Pugh, Norman Pugh, Sam Pugh, Gordon “Tarpin” Pugh, Earlene Leverette Smotherman, Minnie Canady, Dora Mae Dode Canady, Bertha Lee Leverette, and Annie Leverette. 

She is survived by a daughter, Wanda Claxton, and her husband, Gene, of Shelbyville; two sons, Albert Cook, and his wife Connie, of Shelbyville, and Ronnie Cook, and his wife Sheree, of Bell Buckle; seven grandchildren, Tammy Vajcner, and her husband Johnny, Dion Gordon, and his wife Christie, Misty Snoddy, and her husband Charles, Michael Cook, and his wife Jennifer, Scott Cook, and his wife Meghan, Ashley Cook, and Molly Cook; twelve great grandchildren,  Ray Carter, and his wife Amanda,  Cody Carter, Lenzie Gordon, Christopher Gordon, Kirstyn  Ensey, Phillip Gordon, Hannah Ensey, James Donald Gordon, Ayla Snoddy, Jessica Snoddy, Carley Sullivan, and Caroline Cook; two great great grandchildren, Kenzie and Nathan Carter.

Mr. William Richard “Bill” Uselton, age 73, of Shelbyville, died Wednesday, June 10, 2009, at Heritage Medical Center.

Graveside services will be 1:30 Thursday, June 11, 2009, at Zion’s Hill Cemetery.  Reverend James Smith will officiate.

Visitation will be 11AM - 1PM Thursday at Feldhaus Memorial Chapel.

He was born June 25, 1935, in Bedford County, to the late Burl and Hattie Reed Uselton.  He was retired from the Vocational Rehabilitation Center.

He is survived by a sister, Frances Segroves, and her husband Pete, of Murfreesboro; two brothers, Paul and Johnny Uselton, both of Shelbyville.

Mr. Z. E. “Coke” Crowell, Jr. age 80, of Shelbyville, died Saturday, June 13, 2009, at his home after an extended illness.

Funeral services will be 1 PM Monday, June 15, 2009, at Feldhaus Memorial Chapel.  Father Peter Whalen will officiate.  Burial, with full military honors, will follow in Willow Mount Cemetery.

Visitation will be Monday, June 15, 2009, 11AM until time of service at Feldhaus Memorial Chapel.

He was born September 10, 1928, in Bedford County, to the late Z.E. and Algia Hay Crowell, Sr.  He retired from Arnold Engineering Development Center after 35 years of service.  He was an avid golfer and gardener, and a member of the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer.

 He was the Best Dad and Granddad.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Wayne, Brownie, and Donald Crowell, and two sisters, Virginia Parham and Nita Reilly.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Billie Hayes Crowell, of Shelbyville; two sons, Jackie Crowell, and his wife Lynne, of Knoxville, Tennessee, and David Crowell, and his wife Tammy, of Shelbyville; two daughters, Nancy Powell, and her husband Marshall, of Shelbyville, and Kathie Cox, and her husband Don, of Ft. Mohave, Arizona; seven grandchildren, Cory Crowell, and his wife Sherry, Casey Crowell, and Cody Hayes Crowell, all of Knoxville; Josh Crowell and Chelsey Crowell, both of Murfreesboro; Andy Powell and Maggie Sanders, and her husband Jeremy, all of Memphis; two great grandchildren, Hope Biggs, of Memphis, and Maverick Crowell, of Knoxville.  He also leaves a special niece, Sherry Swing , and her husband Frankie, and a special nephew, George Parham, and his wife Laura; favorite cousins, Margaret Tyree, and her husband Paul, and Irma Massey, and her husband Herman, and Dot Travis.

Pamela Wynne Connolly, age 45, of Theodore, Alabama, formerly of Shelbyville, died May 30, 2009, in a motorcycle accident in Theodore, Alabama. 

She was born February 10, 1964, in Illinois, to Dorothy Vandygriff, of Theodore, Alabama, and the late Mark Connolly. 

In addition to her mother, she is survived by a daughter, Misty York, of Shelbyville; two brothers, Donald Connolly, of Lewisburg, and Michael Connolly, of Theodore, Alabama; three grandchildren, Seth York, Heavanne York, and Kiya York. 

Memorial service will be 4 PM Monday at Feldhaus Memorial Chapel. 

Visitation will be one hour prior to service.

Janice Freeman Coleman, age 55, of Tampa, Florida, formerly of Shelbyville, died June 18, 2009, in Tampa, Florida, after an extended illness. 

Funeral services will be June 22, 2009, at Siegroves Funeral Home in Tampa.  Burial will follow in Bushnell Cemetery in Lakeland, Florida. 

She was the daughter of the late Thomas and Edna Freeman. She is survived by a daughter, Elaine Price Miller and a son, Roger Glen Price, both of Florida; six grandchildren; two sisters, Pam Begley and Brenda Sasser, both of Shelbyville; two brothers, Eddie Lee Freeman and Danny Wayne Freeman, both of Shelbyville.

Mr. Bobbie Gene Childers, age 77, of Shelbyville, died Friday, June 19, 2009, at Bedford County Nursing Home.

Graveside services will be 10 AM Wednesday, June 24, 2009, at Willow Mount Cemetery. Reverend Charles Williams will officiate.  Burial will be with full military honors.

Visitation will be 5-7 PM Tuesday, June 23, 2009, at Feldhaus Memorial Chapel.

He was born June 26, 1931, in Pulaski, Tennessee, to the late William Thomas and Alice Elizabeth Compton Childers.  He was a veteran of the United States Air Force and retired from the United States Postal Service in Montgomery, Alabama. He was a member of Fair Haven Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Sandra Childers, in 2007.  He was also preceded in death by five brothers, John T. Childers, Alfred Childers, Maurice Childers, J.C. Childers, and Will Allen Childers, and six sisters, Rachel Childers, Ida Mae Childers, Bonnie Staggs, Annie Clifton, Nellie Throneberry, and Pauline Deason.

He is survived by a son, Barry Childers, and his wife Janie, of Shelbyville; a sister, Betty Cotham, of Waverly, and caregiver, Laverne Childers; two grandchildren, Laura Beth Childers, and Brian Childers, and his wife Samantha.

Mr. Stanford Simmons, age 55, of Shelbyville, died Saturday, June 20, 2009, at Heritage Medical Center. 

Funeral services will be 11 AM Wednesday, June 24, 2009, at Feldhaus Memorial Chapel.  Alec Childress will officiate, with burial to follow in Willow Mount Cemetery. 

The family will receive visitors 6-8 PM Tuesday and again one hour prior to service Wednesday at Feldhaus Memorial Chapel. 

He was born July 27, 1953, in Pulaski, Tennessee, to the late Buford and Jean Delores Johnson Simmons.  He was employed with Marshall Manufacturing and a member of First Baptist Church in Columbia.  He was a 1971 graduate of Carver Smith High School in Columbia. 

He is survived by his wife of 28 years, La'wanda Buchanan Simmons; two daughters, Ta'Karra Simmons and Natalie Love, both of Shelbyville; two sons, Nathanial Love, of Tullahoma and Justin Love, of Georgia; four grandsons, and four granddaughters; four sisters, Carol Parks, of Frankfort, Kentucky, Gail Childress, and her husband Alec, of Skokie, Illinois, Sharon Gilbreath, of Columbia, and Aleta Porter, of Nashville; a loving aunt, Nellie Simmons, Johnson, of Columbia.

Mrs. Bessie Haynes Hudson, age 62, of the Shelbyville, died Tuesday, June 23, 2009, at her home after an extended illness. 

Funeral services will be 11 AM Thursday, June 25, 2009, at Feldhaus Memorial Chapel.  Reverend Carl E. Hall will officiate, with burial to follow in Hopper Cemetery in Marshall County. 

Visitation will be 4-8 PM Wednesday at Feldhaus Memorial Chapel. 

She was born January 30, 1947, in Bedford County, to the late Charlie and Nannie Cook Haynes.  She was employed with Jostens for three years and previously with Economy Pencil for thirteen years.  She was a homemaker and attended Victory Celebration Revival Church.  She loved spending time with her grandchildren, working in her garden, and reading her Bible.  She also found great pleasure in fishing, quilting, crocheting, and visiting with other people. 

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Gertrude Haynes and Flossie Haynes, and four brothers, Jessie Haynes, James Haynes, Grady Haynes, and Allen Haynes. 

She is survived by a daughter, Tammy G. Cantrell, and her husband David, of Shelbyville; a son, Anthony Hudson, of the Haskins Chapel Community; a grandson, Chris Rainey and two granddaughters, Ashley Cantrell and Leslie Cantrell, all of Shelbyville; three brothers, Frank Haynes, of the Wheel Community, Ray Haynes, of Unionville, and Hoyle Haynes, of Wartrace; two sisters, Linda Smotherman, of Belfast, and Faye Duke, of Shelbyville; She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws.  She will be greatly missed by her pets, Max (dog) and Baby (cat).

William Lance West, age 50, passed away at his home in Lewisburg on June 22, 2009.  He is survived by his parents Lester and Barbara West (Lewisburg), grandfather Claude T. Dean (Shelbyville), sister Leslie West Sands and brother-in-law Lester P. Sands, Jr. (Jackson), brother Terry West and sister-in-law Skye (Bell Buckle), sons Joshua West (Knoxville), Alex West (Winchester) step-son Corey Marshall (Winchester), niece Jordana and nephew Paul Sands (Jackson).  He was preceded in death by his grandmothers Ruby Dean (Shelbyville) and Annie West (Lewisburg) and grandfather William T. West (Lewisburg).  An Eagle Scout, Lance was an expert marksman and avid collector of antique guns and coins.  He enjoyed fishing, history, and spending time with his family and friends. He will be sorely missed by all.  A graveside services will be held at Lone Oak cemetery at 9:00 am on June 26th, I lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Marshall County Care Kitchen, c/o 1st United Methodist Church 325 W. Church Street, Lewisburg, TN 37091.

Actor T. Scott Cunningham,
founding member of Drama Dept.
and The Vineyard Community of Artists, dies at age 47
(December 15, 1961-June 20, 2009) 

Actor T. Scott Cunningham, a founding member of Drama Dept. and The Vineyard Community of Artists, died at NYU Medical Center in New York City on Saturday, June 20 from complications due to pneumonia and Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome, according to Sam Rudy, a spokesperson for The Vineyard Theatre. Mr. Cunningham was 47 years old. 

T. Scott Cunningham last appeared this past April at the Philadelphia Theatre Company in Edward Albee's "At Home at the Zoo." On Broadway, he was in "Love! Valour! Compassion!" and revivals of "Design for Living" and "Tartuffe." His off-Broadway credits include "As Bees in Honey Drown" and "Music from a Sparkling Planet," both by Douglas Carter Beane (Drama Dept.); "Wintertime" and "The Dear Boy" (2nd Stage)'; and "New England" (Manhattan Theatre Club). He originated roles in three plays by Nicky Silver: "Pterodactyls" and "The Eros Trilogy" at The Vineyard Theatre and "Fit to be Tied" at Playwright's Horizons.  

Mr. Cunningham was recently in the National Tour of "Twelve Angry Men" and the Las Vegas production of "Mamma Mia!" and was also in the west coast tour of "Take Me Out." He is very proud to have been in the Kennedy Center's production of "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" with George Grizzard. His work in regional theatre includes South Coast Rep, Seattle Rep, Old Globe (Richard Greenberg's "The Violet Hour"), Long Wharf, McCarter, Alliance, Williamstown, NY Stage & Film, Portland Stage Co., Utah Shakespeare (title role in "Hamlet"), and many others.   

His film and television credits include Serendipity, The Out of Towners, Our Very Own, People I Know and The Boys of Sunset Ridge, "Law and Order," "Law and Order: Criminal Intent," "Maximum Bob," "Cybill," and "Central Park West."  

In a statement, playwright Nicky Silver said: "T. Scott Cunningham was a brilliant actor, an inspiration, and a dear, dear friend. We were very close for the last 17 years. I will miss him every day.  

Survived by his partner of fourteen years, Harry Bouvy of New York City; parents Judy and Tim Cunningham, brother Kevin, sister-in-law Jena, niece Morgan, nephews Mason and Kade; special aunt, Caroline Riddle, all of Shelbyville, Tennessee; countless friends and colleagues in theatre, film and television.

Mrs. Evelyn Marie Paschal Wheeler, age 83, of Shelbyville, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, June 24, 2009, at her home after an extended illness. 

Funeral services will be 3 PM Saturday, June 27, 2009, at Feldhaus Memorial Chapel.  Reverend Bobby McGee will officiate, with burial to follow in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. 

Visitation will be 5-8 PM Friday at Feldhaus Memorial Chapel. 

She was born May 7, 1926, in Bedford County, to the late Robert Evans Paschal and Robbie Ophelia Baker Paschal.  Her early work history included employment with the FBI in Oak Ridge under General E.J. Brennis while construction of the atomic bomb was taking place during WWII.  She also worked at Harris Middle School, 1973-1993, the Register of Deeds Office, and the Tax Assessor’s Office in the Court House.  She played basketball at Shelbyville Central High School in 1944 and was a member of First Baptist Church, serving as secretary for the Sunday School Department and also Sunday school teacher.  She was known for her entertaining of friends, and family, as was a wonderful cook. It was a blessing to be invited to her table. She was also a quilt maker and talented seamstress. She also loved her vegetable gardening.  

She was preceded in death her husband, Auburn Wheeler and a son, William Auburn Wheeler, Jr.  She was also preceded in death by a brother, Delmous Paschal. 

She is survived by two daughters, Belinda Craig, and her husband David, and Teresa Gill, and her husband Alan, all of Shelbyville; four grandchildren, Tad Craig, and his wife Teresa, of Murfreesboro, Ben Craig, and his wife Lana, of Shelbyville, J. Alan Gill, and his wife Emily, and Tyler Gill, all of Shelbyville; three great grandchildren, Elizabeth Mackenzie Craig, William Stone Craig, and Andrew Walker Craig; a sister in law, Imogene Crowell Paschal.

Burial will be 11 AM EST Wednesday, July 1, 2009, at Hamilton Memorial Gardens in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Visitation will be one hour prior to service Tuesday at Feldhaus Memorial Gardens.

She was born Martha Elizabeth Rogers on October 4, 1920, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, to the late Daniel Jackson Rogers II and Catherine Varnell Rogers.  She was a retired church secretary.  She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Shelbyville.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Denton Peck in 2005, and a brother, Daniel Jackson Rogers, III.

She is survived by two daughters, Charlotte O’Dell, and her husband Jim, of Shelbyville, and Dana Peck, of Panacea, Florida; six grandchildren, Lisa Dugger, and her husband Tony, David Allen O’Dell, Corey King, and her husband Jeff, Matthew Taylor Slavens, James Denton O’Dell, and John William Slavens; five great grandchildren, Jesse O’Dell, Lindsay Dugger, Sam Dugger, Eamon King, and Maggie King.
